Celebrating Independence Day 2009

fourthofjuly.jpgIndependence Day, commonly known as the Fourth of July, is a federal holiday commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain. Independence Day is commonly associated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, picnics, concerts, baseball games, political speeches and ceremonies, and various other public and private events celebrating the history, government, and traditions of the United States. Independence Day is the national day of the United States.

In San Diego, it’s sun, fun, beach, fair, mountains, BBQing, family, friends, and waiting from the night time to fall. See the complete list of fireworks from San Diego Travel Tips.

Thank you for the nearly ten years of reading SDRadio and see you on the radio over the weekend! Breaking news as it happens and next regularly scheduled column is Monday, July 6, 2009.

Lee Hacksaw Hamilton has hit a home run, scored a touchdown, and made a GOOOOOOOOAAAAAALLLL this week. He has been filling in the morning show at XX Sports 1090. Lee’s been missing from the local airwaves, but has been busy on Sirius/XM Satellite radio and is one of the voices of the new football network this fall. Here’s hoping that there is room in the budget and schedule to have Lee back on the San Diego sports waves full time.

New appreciation for Cookie Chainsaw Randolph at 101.5 KGB. There’s a group of long time radio fans that take drink shots of espresso every time Chain says Jack Baurer on a reference to 24 comes up. The jitters last until lunch.

Thank you for stopping by this week, full report for a Friday early tomorrow morning. See YOU on the radio, and in ((stereo)) where available.

Update: The memorial service for Helmut Kerling is 3 p.m. on Sunday. The time was previously noted earlier. The service is open and will be at St. David’s Episcopal Church 5050 Milton St., San Diego, 92110

More family pets will run away from home on the 4th of July than during any other day of the year because of fireworks. Helen Woodward Animal Center encourages families to take a few simple precautions to make sure that their pets are safe during Independence Day fireworks celebrations.

HWAC spokesman John Van Zante says, “Even if the fireworks are several miles away, the sound can terrify family pets. If they don’t have safe places to hide, or if there’s a way for them to run out a door or escape through a fence, your pet will be gone.”

HWAC offers a few suggestions for families to keep their pets safe this week.

    * Do not take your pets along to the fireworks displays.
    * Bring your pets indoors before fireworks displays begin.
    * Make sure that your pets have access to their favorite “safe place” or find a quiet, comfortable, enclosed room where your pets can “hide” if they need to.
    * If you go to a fireworks display and leave your pets at home alone, leave the radio or TV set on so there is some “normal” background noise.

“This is also a great time to make sure your pets are micro-chipped.” says Van Zante. “Many pets that run away during the fireworks escape by slipping out of their collars. A micro-chip will identify your pet if it ends up at a shelter.”

What if your pet escapes in spite of your efforts? “Search through your neighborhood right away…then keep it up. Don’t quit after a day or two. Check with the animal shelters and keep checking for several weeks. You can also post signs in your neighborhood, but the best thing to do is to make sure your pets never get out to begin with.”

For more information call Helen Woodward Animal Center at 858-756-4117 or visit the Center at 6461 El Apajo Road. For the location of all animal shelters in San Diego log on to www.animalcenter.org.

I get this strange image of Ed McMahon, Farrah Fawcett, Michael Jackson and Gary Cocker all in some kind of staging area. The threesome are pointing toward Gary asking…who’s the guy with the headphones..they’re soon to be exposed to one of the true personality people in broadcasting..when you know someone like Cocker for over 30 years and they’re suddenly not there anymore..a super void is the experience…i think i can speak for Norman Flint and myself when i say we are not taking Garys’ passing well at all…it is a friendship that has been cut drastically short.”

So sad to hear about Gary! I remember how he used to keep the Coors can hidden out of sight behind the cart machines at 13K. Like “Dr. Johnny Fever” he seemed to actually get funnier on the air the more he imbibed. Unfortunately, like Radio Brother John Leslie, that “endearing trait” became a personal hellhole. For all the Demons, there was an enormous natural talent and a truly unique voice that was the envy of all pop-music jocks of the day.

Now heard Mornings on KGOD. Via Con Dios, mi Amigo!

Thanks for putting up the Gary Cocker stuff.

I first met Gary right after his second bout with rehab back in 1992 at KCBQ FM. I was just newbie looking for direction in Radio and found my mentor sitting in a studio reading a book. Within a moment, he turned on his mic, did his spiel and went back to reading his book and sipping his coffee. I said to myself, now that’s a real pro, I think I can learn a thing or two from this guy. The first words out his mouth to me was, “Hey man, you got an extra smoke?” At that point, I realized and said to him “Holy cow, you’re the channel six guy” and he said “Well man that gig is over, so you gotta smoke?” I remember Gary for his dry sense of humor, articulation, wit, loyalty, a one of a kind voice, and most of all a true friend.

I saw Gary a few weeks ago in the hospital, the man was a WARRIOR He stated he was going to be alright and that this will too pass. We didn’t talk about the illness because he was more focused on his future and what he was going to do when he felt better, and that’s the man’s spirit and what kind of a man he was.

I truly miss him, and I loved him like a brother and I got a chance to say that to him before he passed.

Tony Morrison AKA Tony Morgan did mornings at KPRI, mornings at KBNN, and now is a Realtor in Orange/San Diego County.

I am so truly sadden by the passing of Gary as so many who knew him are. I had the privilege of working with this talented wonderful man, and knowing him as a true radio brother to me at KCBQ in the mid 80’s.. We have all lost a great, great friend.

            ~~

Rob Actis writes: “Gary was one of the really good guys in radio. I feel very lucky to have had the chance to work with Gary when I was on the air at B-100. A really great memory that I have about Gary was that he was always cool with letting me hang out in the studio with him after a shift, which was just across the hallway.

“He was a true professional and will be missed. I remember listening to him at KCBQ and then 13K. I tried to win a contest at 13K when I was only 15 years old. It was the DJ for a day contest. When I met Gary at KFMB about 7 years later, I told him that I used to call him for that contest, he actually remembered me calling in after all that time.

“Gary told me some amazing stories about his career in radio and I sure learned a lot from him.

“God bless you Gary. You will be missed, never forgotten. ”
            ~~

Norman Ellis-Flint writes about Gary: “It was 1981 – I had just left the station driving home listening to Gary doing PM drive on 13K. He was free flowing and unabridged, dancing with his demons. Lenny Bruce was laughing, I was blown away. Years later I would work with him again getting him the morning show on Classic 103.

“Six weeks ago I got a call from his chosen lady friend, Kate in Phoenix, telling me Gary had driven to the hospital on Coronado.

On the phone he told me was going home. The next day he called back and said further testing confirmed Pancreatic Cancer. I met him at home and sat with him until Kate arrived. A few days later he began telling me his story.

“His first love was his grammar school teacher who had sexually abused him for about 2 years. In fear of his emotions, when she and her husband would come to visit his family, he would hide in another room.

“In reading his high school yearbook it was clear that everyone saw Gary as the intellectual clown, a distant, yet intriguing personality.

“His brother Pete told me that most saw Gary as aloof – Gary saw many as pretentious and patronizing and he couldn’t be that. It was his blessing in life, and a bit of a curse in his profession.

“Gary would skyrocket into radio’s upper echelon without ever becoming part of the clique. The Demons were his closest allies as he navigated the treacherous waters of over inflated egos.

“It was in the early 90’s when I drove Gary to the re-hab facility in La Jolla [his second attempt - the first ending in a binge the day he walked out]. This time it worked. He became an AA counselor, sponsoring others and responding to 4AM calls when they cried out for help. He was still holding meetings with them until last Saturday when, for the first time in over 15 years, he had to cancel. Gary was a loner yet never turned away from a person in need. I think he had a profound understanding of what it was like.

“I visited him on Monday and again Tuesday evening with my daughter Shya who talked politics for hours on end when Gary would come to visit; the last time was with Kate for Christmas dinner.

“I got a call from Kate early Wednesday morning - Gary had left. I cried until I could hardly breath. That’s when Gary spoke to me with his strange compassion that, at first glance, feels like anything but, and said:

“Norman, realize that, deep within the pain, disguised as a void, is the true meaning of friendship.”

            “Once again, as so many times over the years, I heard myself saying;
            thanks Gary …. ”

Norman does voice overs, writes and produces from his home studio in Poway.

Celebrating the radio host also known as ‘Gary Cocker’

helmut.jpgRadio Heaven gained much yesterday when Helmut Kerling joined the Big Broadcast Studio in the sky. Most in the market knew him as Gary Cocker, and one by one by phone or email said the same thing: “A very nice guy.”

              Friends and co-workers write:

              Rich Brother Robbin writes:

Helmut (as we called him in later years) was a fiercely loyal friend whose service to others, kind and loving soul and happy-go-lucky demeanor will be greatly missed my all of us that knew and loved him. Godspeed, old friend!

(Rich worked with Gary at several radio junctions in life.)

13k.jpgJeff Prescott writes: “When I first met Gary at 13K, immediately I knew he was a PRO from whom I could learn, and hold in awe! And then, when he lived near me here in La Jolla, and I got to know him better, I knew what a great guy he was.

“It was great to re-connect with him over the past few years at Shotgun and Linda’s home……… He will be missed, for being a professional talent, and a very nice human being.
              We’re all at a loss.

Sandi Banister sends: “Jim and I will miss Helmut very much. He was one of the good guys in broadcasting. Never complained about working weekends, overnights or whatever he had to do. He was a generous man. JM worked with him at 13K, although Jim was on the FM side, they quickly became very good friends.

“I worked with him at 760 KFMB and loved to drop in and hang with him while he was on the air. It seems like just yesterday he was at our house with Norman Flint and we were all laughing and enjoying each other. The great voice and friend is gone but his spirit and the love he shared will live with us forever.

Sandi is the the Promotions Manager at San Diego Fox 5. Jim is heard on KFMB-AM and KFMB-FM.

John Dirscoll writes: “I saddened to hear Helmut lost his valiant fight, I talked to him last week at his home and he had some setbacks but still held out hope. He was a pleasure to work with and a great person to have as a friend , he will be missed.”
John Driscoll. Visit his web site at JohnDiscrollVoiceOverAmerica.blogspot.com.

Sonny West worked with Gary at KCBQ writes: “I was so bummed to hear about the passing of Gary Cocker. We worked at KCBQ in the early 80’s when we were Q-105 Country.

country105.jpgPicture one of the air staff taken by Skip Juris on Nov 17, 1983 and the Wranglers Roost on Zion and Mission Gorge Road.

From left to right (Standing on wall): Dan Harville, Valerie Ferarri, Ben Ziegler, Fuzzy Herron (Standing in front): Sonny West, Gary Cocker

Picture two was a sales piece from that era along with some of the other jocks. I was doing mornings at the time.

My first taste of Gary Cocker was when he was at 13K. Always smooth, always “Cock-ere on the air” he was a tough act to beat. I know, I was head-to-head with him at K-105 in 1979 and constantly got my ARB lunch handed to me. When I had the chance to work with him at KCBQ in 1982 I was thrilled and he became a mentor and friend to me. He was the kind of guy that made an instant impression on you.

1053jocks2.jpgGary was one of the best communicators on the air in San Diego. He truly got what it took to be intimate with the listener.

He was the most well-read guy I’d ever met. Always had a book in his hand…very esoteric subject matter, too, like the Art of War by SunTzu not a fluff novel. This guy was a true broadcaster and knew how to do radio. And he knew how to do it well and was not afraid to tell a Program Director he thought he was an idiot. This was Gary’s downfall at a few stations but smart PD’s, secure in their manhood, listened to Gary’s ideas and concepts and often put them into practice…and that made for a better radio station.

I can honestly say I feel I’m a better broadcaster and a better person for knowing Gary Cocker.

My wife Anne, and I will miss you pal.” Thank you Sonny! Sonny is with KyXy-FM in San Diego.

Mark Larson and Gary worked with each other at 760 KFMB. Mark was the program director then, and writes: “He was one of San Diego’s great radio voices. Loved working with him at KFMB. Always consistent on the air, too. I always joked with him about “why change your name on air? People would love THE HELMUT KERLING SHOW!” Yes , he battled his demons (who doesn’t, especially in this business).”

charicatureopt.gifKen Copper found out about Gary’s death today in New York City. “We flew over Cleveland, his hometown.” Ken added, “One of the good guys and excelled at everything he did.”

Sample Gary’s pipes: Books on Tape | Commercial | Corporate | Internet | Broadcast

Shotgun Tom Kelly and his wife, Linda write: “Gary was a longtime friend and frequent visitor to my house on Saturday Nights, everybody was always excited to see him when he stopped by.

“Just last Sunday, my wife Linda and I had the opportunity to spend the afternoon with Gary, we cracked jokes, and reminisced about the good times. We had no idea it was going to be the last time we’d see him. He will be missed.”

              “Shotgun Tom” and Linda

Keith Miller at KPRI remembered Gary when the station was SETS 102. Keith said that “Gary could always do it in one take. A true professional on and off the mic.”

Gabe Lemuz writes: “Before i got into Radio , I remember GC on 13K radio. When I went to work with KFMB radio in 1987, I worked with GC, I thought that was very cool. GC has a great voice.”

Radio personality Gary Cocker died this morning

helmut.jpgGary Cocker, radio personality at KGB, 760 KFMB, KCBQ, and other stations in California, died today. He was 59.

Gary died of pancreatic cancer at 6:15 a.m. today. Details about his service and a “celebration of life” will be announced shortly.

His birth name was Helmut Kerling and his mark on San Diego is far and wide.

Friend Ron Houston writes: Helmut and I go back a lot of years when he was a jock at KCBQ and then doing the voice overs at XETV. We did our famous lounge act together for too many days then decided it was time to tend the act, and so we’ve been doing a straight act since.”

Gary wrote about himself at his web site: “A veteran of the major market radio wars, (and with the scars to prove it) I began my broadcasting career in Cleveland, Ohio, hosting a late night “Progressive Rock” program. Known as “Alternative,” the show featured the music of the emerging artists of the late sixties: Jimi Hendrix, The Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin….the whole cast from Monterey Pop and Woodstock. This was before AOR was a defined format. “Alternative” aired on WZAK-FM in glorious monophonic sound.”

His made it to San Diego after stops in San Francisco and Los Angeles. “By 1980 I took Interstate Five South to San Diego and hooked up with Brown Broadcasting’s KGB. Another legendary set of calls ready to make a go of it with the long dormant AM station. Re-dubbed 13K, it was the last real AM radio turnaround success story.”

kcbqopt.jpg“KCBQ Country, 1983, with Sonny West, Ben Zeigler, Mike Guymon, Jim Buckalew, Laura Wilkinson, Paul Menard, Dave Love, Fuzzy Herron. I am on the lower right, first row, right in front of Bill Moffitt, who, as usual, got the girl. (Click on photo for a larger view.)

“I began my involvement with XETV channel six in 1980, serving as a promotional consultant, producer and station announcer. During this time I extended my roots in the community by starting my first production/advertising company, Cleveland Associates.”

kfmbopt.jpg“In 1984 I took a job as the “John Havlicek” of full service KFMB radio. The flexible hours and production contacts fit perfectly into my business plan, and it was great fun working the many sporting events the station was involved in, particularly the Del Mar Gran Prix and the annual Golf Tournament at Torrey Pines. See our remote trailer on site at Torrey Pines Golf Course. That’s Geni Cavett in the knickers on the right.”

“Lots of remote work as well as talented PD Mark Larson made my stay with KFMB a pleasure for six years.”

                For more details, see GaryCocker.com

Funeral details are not known at this time. Gary’s photo thanks to Shotgun Tom Kelly.

                  ~~

Yesterday’s news about San Diego’s weather on KNSD-TV, NBC San Diego to come from Los Angeles has a few readers and viewers upset.

Frank from Santee writes: “I won’t be watching NBC 7 for weather news, then. This shifting of news (helloooo KOGO!)/weather( KNSD?)/ et al, to other markets which understand neither our local communities’ nuances (hopefully they confuse La Jolla with my Santee, Mayor Randy Voepel’s “La Jolla of East County”- heh heh) is ridiculous. When the viewers/listeners realize they’re getting programmed music and programmed news/weather from a different City and different climate (L.A.’s rainfall typically doubles ours) the bean counters will figure out they lost viewers/listeners/ad revenue/jobs. Good job, pinheads.”

While the contrition continues, one expert in the field expects this to be the norm across the country, not only in San Diego.

Fritz Coleman to do local weather direct from Los Angeles

brown_pat.jpgSources at NBC have confirmed that part of the NBC San Diego newscast will originate from KNBC Los Angeles.

Pat Brown, current weather forecaster, will be missing from the television airwaves as of Friday. In turn, the NBC owned and operated station will have Fritz Coleman delivering the weather from the LA basin.

Pat was previously heard on KyXy-FM with Sonny West, and Kevin Dean. She is also a credited teacher and taught one year in North County.

The addition of Fritz to the newscast means that the weather reports will be from another microclimate. Southern California is diverse in its area, and long time residents know that weather in LA is extremely different than the weather in America’s Finest City.

The San Diego County Fair has a display of some radio history and it’s part of the admission! Yesterday, Shotgun Tom Kelly, along with Jeff Prescott talked about all things about San Diego radio and the importance of it.

With the seats filled with fans of radio, Shotgun went down the history path of live broadcasts from the fair. He played a vintage aircheck of Frank Thompson at the 1966 fair — talking about the new 5-freeway that runs by the fairgrounds!

Shotgun and Jeff pointed to the display of history near the stage area. In it are gems from the KGB Chicken, pictures of a KOGO and the famed studios of kogo-fair1.jpg KCBQ. Also on display are original KGB Homegrown albums. Noted that Stephen Bishop submitted a song for the record, but his entry was turned down because his contribution was in the wrong format. The song did make it as a national hit, On and On!

There is also contributions from KyXy, KPRI, and Recuerdo 102.9. The exhibit is just a fraction of the radio history in the market.

Shotgun and Jeff also discussed how many radio personalities stopped by before moving to the bigger markets. Regis Philbin, Shadoe Stevens, Beaver Cleaver, Charlie Tuna and others. They reminisced how Ken Levine, known on air as Beaver Cleaver went on to be a success full script writer for M*A*S*H, Cheers, and other television shows. He is heard on KABC in Los Angeles providing post-game discussion about the Dodgers.

kgbchicken.jpg Some old time traditions continue to this day. Originally known as the KGB Chicken, Ted Giannoulas took an animated commercial and essentially has made a career out of it. The Chicken is in much demand over the summer. Now simply known as the San Diego Chicken, Ted’s contribution to the allure of radio continues. Also noted was how the original KGB Skyshow was in two places. After massive traffic jams broke out, the police insisted that the Skyshow be in one place. After two years at Sea World, the Skyshow continues in the early fall during San Diego State Aztec Football.

In all, it’s a great place to spend about 30-minutes to enjoy a slice of radio history up close. The exhibit is near the O’Brien Gate.

Welcome back to SDRadio. Sorry for the delay, but a comedy of self-induced errors and other calamity has made June a hard month. The web site resumes normal programming today!

Bolt Attack: Chargers, Clear Channel Communications in San Diego sign two-year extension

The San Diego Chargers announced Thursday a two-year contract extension with Clear Channel Communications to broadcast all of the team’s preseason, regular season and postseason games through 2011. The current contract was due to expire following the 2009 season. No financial terms of the contract were disclosed.

Rock 105.3 FM will continue to serve as the radio home of the Chargers and will continue to produce extended pre-game and postgame shows. Clear Channel XTRA Sports 1360 AM also will broadcast the games and the post game shows.

As part of the extension, the Chargers are taking on an increasing amount of sell-able inventory.

“We have enjoyed a very positive working relationship with Rock 105.3, XTRA Sports 1360 and the Clear Channel group,” said Chargers Chief Operating Officer Jim Steeg. “This relationship with Clear Channel has provided the Chargers with greater exposure for our games and our team throughout Southern California as well as to a wide variety of audiences and demographics.

“Signing this extension now is a win-win for the Chargers and Clear Channel as well as our fans. It allows both organizations to continue selling multi-year sponsorships and packages, and it provides important continuity for our fans.”

Clear Channel President and Market Manager Debbie Wagner added: “We are extremely pleased to continue to be in business with the San Diego Chargers for this upcoming season and the following two years. The Chargers, like Clear Channel, pride themselves on being the very best. We truly value our partnership.”

The Chargers originally partnered with Clear Channel Communications and Rock 105.3 FM in 2005 to carry all preseason, regular season and postseason games. XTRA Sports 1360 AM began carrying the games in 2008. Since day one of the partnership, it has included an enhanced programming and promotional relationship with all seven Clear Channel stations in San Diego, including Rock 105.3 FM, 101.5 KGB FM, Star 94.1 FM, New Country 95.7 FM, Channel 93.3 FM, XTRA Sports 1360 AM and KOGO 600 AM.

In addition to the Clear Channel stations, the Chargers’ radio network includes the following partners to carry all preseason, regular season and postseason games:

                        · KLAC 570 AM – Los Angeles/Orange County
                        · KWWN 1100 AM – Las Vegas
                        · KNWQ 1140 AM – Palm Springs
                        · KGEO 1230 AM – Bakersfield
                        · KXO 1230 AM – Imperial Valley/Yuma
                        · KSPA 1510 AM – Ontario/Rancho Cucamonga/Inland Empire
                        · KNWH 1250 AM – Yucca Valley
                        · KNWZ 970 AM – Coachella Valley
                        · KOSS 1380 AM – Palmdale/Lancaster
                        · KWDJ 1360 AM – Ridgecrest
                        · XHFG 107.3 FM – Tijuana (Spanish)
                        · KWKW 1330 AM – Los Angeles (Spanish)

                        ~~

If you are one of the small percentage of folks that view television using an antenna — you may find KUSI-TV missing from the line-up. KUSI has retooled their branding back to “51″ and TVs and setup boxes will have to be retuned to receive the channel. For those keeping score at home, KUSI is on UHF channel 18. FCC rules have stations using their former analog channel as the placemarker. In the scheme of things, a low-powered digital station signed on at UHF channel 51. KDTF, owned by Entravision, is the first low-powered digital station in the county. It’s original analog channel was 36.

To make matters worse, there is a digital station on channel 18 in Los Angeles and that station could cause problems with KUSI.

                        ~~

Remember LA’s talk FM station, KLSX? CBS dropped talk and brought top-forty all hits radio to the frequency … and the station is in the top five stations in LA listening area. The fourth place station (12+) has its sights on KIIS-FM.

                        ~~

Sophie@103.7 (KSCF) announced the month-long celebration of the radio station’s 2nd year of broadcasting in San Diego. The festivities culminate on Saturday, June 27th with Sophie@103.7’s 2nd Birthday Bash at the House of Blues San Diego featuring full-set performances by Sugar Ray, Mat Kearney, and special guest Angel Taylor! The Birthday Bash marks another successful year for Sophie@103.7 whose inception on June 22, 2007 brought a new, modern adult contemporary radio station to the San Diego market. A division of CBS Corporation, CBS RADIO also operates KyXy-FM in San Diego. Sophie@103.7 – KSCF-FM can be heard streaming live at www.RadioSophie.com.

Welcome to SDRadio for Thursday, June 5, 2009

rrlogo.pngYesterday was a rough news day. The industry bible for many years, Radio and Records ceased publication. It was almost disturbing as the announcement that 101.5 KGB’s Ruth 66 is a Republican.

As for Radio and Records, the owner, The Nielsen Company, decided to pull the plug and cease publication on-line and on-print. The move was swift, last night the web site redirected to the Billboard web site.

All Access and LARadio.com have in depth coverage. The effect of good ole R and R shutting down was felt world wide. Erika Engle of the Honolulu Star-Bulletin told me via Twitter that “RR an institution; but you know how papers are this year”.

And that’s the way it is, as a legend ceases publication — and the world moves on.

                            ~~

nina.jpgEqually disturbing was the recording that 101.5 KGB’s own Ruth 66 is a Republican. Ears did not deceive me as Dave Rickards passed up a chance to see Chris Boyer’s house and riding lawn mower. Dave confirmed several times, along with Cookie Chainsaw Randolph, that Ruth was indeed a Republican.

Was it that one of her first jobs was working with Roger Hedgecock on the radio? Or was it the secret listening to Rush Limbaugh? No matter what the case, it was a shot across the bow of democracy that Ruth insisted that she is a Republican, no matter what her Facebook profile has posted.

                            Ruthie, we hardly knew yee.

Is the Garden Compass going a different direction? The weekend show that features Bryan Main along with garden experts Bruce Asakawa, Sharon Asakawa and John Bagnasco, the Garden Compass radio program can be heard throughout California and parts of Arizona.

An important announcement about growing in other parts of the country … is expected soon. The show is currently on AM 1700 San Diego.

rickamato.jpgThe Rick Amato Show and The Washington Times announced today that the show is now called “The Rick Amato Show, Presented By The Washington Times.” The change is effective immediately.

The show’s focus will be politics, pop culture and national security.

As the new title sponsor, the Washington Times will contribute significantly to the radio show’s content with its award-winning investigative reporting and journalists.

“We have developed a very good working relationship with Rick Amato and The Rick Amato Show and we enjoy the San Diego and southern California markets,” said John Solomon, Executive Director of the Washington Times. “This is a natural next step in that relationship”.

“To have access to the Washington Times investigative resources in the areas of politics and national security will only enhance the quality of stories and information we bring to our loyal listeners,” noted Rick Amato.

As for the “pop culture” perspective, Amato added, “The liberal left has obviously been winning the pop culture war. I am committed to exposing examples of hypocrisy and intimidation of the right by institutions such as Hollywood, mainsteam media and college campuses. The relationships I have developed within the entertainment world - including with Andrew Breitbart - gives us an unique opportunity to educate people and open their minds”.

It was also announced today that AmericanBullion.com has retained studio naming rights of The Rick Amato Show, known as the AmericanBullion.com Solid Gold Studios. AmericanBullion.com only offers gold from America, mined on American soil.
